Optimizely Web Experimentation

Optimizely (Insight Partners) · United States · since 2010

7.4/10

Enterprise client-side A/B testing for large organisations running continuous experimentation programs, sold only through custom annual contracts, with no public price and no self-serve tier.

Best for Large organisations running formal experimentation programs

The verdict

Optimizely’s Stats Engine, sequential always-valid inference with false-discovery-rate control, is the academic gold standard, and the targeting depth is unmatched out of the box. But with median contracts around $81,000/year, no trial, heavy developer dependency and a snippet that does not load on Shopify checkout at all, it is an enterprise program tool, not a merchant’s tool.

Strengths

  • Statistical rigour is genuinely differentiated: sequential always-valid inference (mSPRT) with tiered FDR control, published academically, it solves peeking and multiple comparisons rather than warning about them.
  • Deep out-of-the-box targeting: ~16 audience condition types plus custom JavaScript, uploaded lists, behavioral conditions and raw JSON mode.
  • A full experimentation stack under one vendor: client-side, server-side/flags across 14 SDK languages, personalization and a CDP.
  • Enterprise compliance posture: ISO 27001:2022, SOC 2 Type 2, PCI DSS, TISAX, public DPA, EU data hosting option.
  • Reviewers confirm same-day launch for simple visual tests and low page-performance impact (TrustRadius 8.7/10, 599 ratings).

Weaknesses

  • Cost, and no way to check it: no published pricing, no trial, no free tier, median contract ~$81k/year per procurement data. Prices out SMBs and most single-store merchants.
  • Developer dependency is the most consistent reviewer complaint, complex tests need significant custom code.
  • Weak Shopify fit: no first-party app, manual snippet install, and no snippet on checkout pages at all.
  • Client-side snippet ships experiment config plus jQuery; the faster Performance Edge mode has a 2-second window that causes flicker on SPAs and drops personalization.
  • Product sprawl: Web/Feature Experimentation, Personalization, Performance Edge, Analytics and ODP are separate SKUs with different stats support, buyers must decode the catalog before they can price it.
  • Reporting gaps for non-conversion metrics like average order value; reports retire after a time window.

The facts

StatisticsStats Engine: frequentist sequential testing with always-valid inference (mSPRT) and tiered Benjamini-Hochberg false-discovery-rate control, academically published and genuinely differentiated. Fixed-horizon and Bayesian options exist in beta (documented for Feature Experimentation).
ShopifyNo first-party Shopify app for Web Experimentation, install is a manual theme.liquid snippet edit or a $29/month third-party app. Optimizely’s own docs: the snippet does not load on Shopify checkout pages; checkout events need a custom pixel. Revenue tracking leans on the separate paid ODP product.
Privacy & hostingEU Data Hosting offered, but Optimizely states "some services aren’t in scope" without listing them, whether Web Experimentation is covered is unverified. Strong cert list (ISO 27001:2022, SOC 2 Type 2, PCI DSS, TISAX), public DPA with SCCs. Five consent options; no cookieless mode for Web Experimentation.
Pricing"Every Optimizely plan is individually packaged", no prices, no trial, no free tier for Web Experimentation. Procurement data (Vendr, 126 purchases) reports a median annual contract of ~$81,000; third-party estimates put entry around $36–40k/year.
